On the evening of July 4th I returned to the steps of the Lincoln memorial - which were now jam-packed - to await the arrival of dusk and the fireworks display. I settled in to the grass to write postcards to my nephews and study my dental flashcards. As the sky darkened, cheers of USA! USA! broke out all around... it was impossible not to feed off that infectious energy and wave my tiny flag with the thousands of people around me! Finally, the most amazing fireworks display in the nation began. Over the capitol, Washington Monument, reflecting pool, and World War II memorial burst a dazzling procession of sparkling explosions, each more impressive than the last. The photo of the Mall above was taken earlier in the day from approximately the same spot where I sat in awe of the amazing display!
